Premier Foods spends around GBP 1.5bn on externally sourced goods and services annually.

This spend splits into three main areas: Raw Materials (£900m), Non Production Goods & Services (£450m) and Wheat (£150m).

In a year our suppliers typically provide us with:

- 62 million litres of milk (enough to fill 248 Olympic swimming pools)
- 11,500 tonnes of peas (the equivalent weight to 17,692 minis)
- 1.2 billion cans (which if placed end to end would stretch to the moon and back 148 times)
- 513,275,435 kw hours of electricity (enough to run 34 central hospitals)
- 8.5% of the UK crop (that is 1 in every four fields of bread making wheat grown in the UK and is equivalent to the entire land mass of Beds, Bucks, Northants and Oxon).

Although we are primarily a UK focussed business, we have a global sourcing strategy and acquire over 27,000 items from all corners of the world.  For example, each year we buy 2000 tonnes of strawberries from Europe; 4000 tonnes of honey from South America; 900 tonnes of chicken from Thailand; 2700 tonnes of cocoa from Africa; 7500 tonnes of tomatoes from China and 40,000 tonnes of beans from Canada.

As a significant importer of materials either directly or indirectly from many parts of the world our strategic sourcing process will take into account cost, quality, safety, the nature and reliability of the source, environmental impacts and workplace practices.

The procurement of goods and contracted services by Premier Foods will fall in line with (as a minimum) the current legal requirements and with the company’s Ethical Trading, Environmental and Health and Safety policies.
